Sears Tour Cielo Vista Mall El Paso, TX in 2012 (1982 - present, downsized sometime in 2024)

This is an added store that opened in 1982 in the Cielo Vista Mall that opened with the rest of the anchors 8 years prior in 1974. This store has been Sears the whole time, unlike the [Sunland Park Mall location that originally opened as The Popular in 1988] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3MSNc5UZX4). Both elevators (passenger and freight) are Montgomery G&P (Globe and Parallelogram). The passenger lift is a Montgomery G&P hydraulic that was modernised sometime in the 2000s and serves 2 floors and the goods lift is a Montgomery G&P hydraulic with buttons replaced by Emco / EPCO sometime in the 1990s and serves a total of 3 floors, including the [top floor penthouse that is a giant mechanical room] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRyiORtbq8E&t=99s). As for the store layout, it was nearly identical to the Century III Mall location (r/deadmalls) that opened in 1980 as its fifth anchor to that dead mall that opened in 1976 and closed down on December 7th of 2014, followed by the Macy's in 2016, and the entire structure has since been demolished after the rest of the mall closed down in 2019, with its JC Penney closing in 2020.

This location is still open and one of 5 left in the 140-year-old retailer's 250-year-old home country, the United States of America. Unlike the Concord location in California (1966-present), where the watch repair guy came back to clear out everything and has since retired in India, El Paso still has a watch repair shop that is in operation. Despite Primark occupying the 2nd floor mall entrance and half of that floor, the other half of floor 2 is still Sears and the stairwell is still available and they still have a 2nd floor entrance where they recently updated the logo.

Update On The Kmart Website And Social Media Pages

While Sears and even Montgomery Ward, along with Bed Bath and Beyond, Pier 1, Sharper Image, Linens and Things, Lord and Taylor (L&T) and Eddie Bauer... even Radio Shack... are still updating there websites and [Sears' website has a 4th of July (250 Year Celebration) banner on the home page] (https://www.reddit.com/r/SEARS/comments/1ukztv9/searscom_4th_of_july_sale/), Kmart is still not updating there website and has not been... in fact there online retail site is still stuck with a banner saying "These Deals Won't Last Forever" on the home page and they stopped posting on Facebook in September of 2024 and on Instagram in May of 2024. What has happened to Kmart's website and social media pages ?

Sears.com 4th of July Sale

Unlike the Kmart website which still has a banner stating "These Deals Won't Last Forever" on the home page as of December 2021 the Sears website is still getting new banners on the home page even today and there having a 4th of July sale (America's 250 Year Celebration)

Sears in Braintree, MA as of today, July 1, 2026

There are two floors (lower and main). I haven’t researched yet but I presume it used to be 3 floors and the top floor was taken over by Primark. The first floor has basically all the merchandise, and is extremely clean and well stocked. Lower level is mostly just major appliances in boxes and the washrooms. Washrooms were extremely clean.

Down escalator worked, up did not. Elevator was also out of service.

Was happy to be in a Sears again, regardless!

140 year old legacy retailer Sears is still in operation with 5 stores, a couple distribution centers and e-commerce website Sears.com. Will / would you still shop there, even site wide even if the online store drop ships mostly and the stores are lacking in merchandise? If not why not?

In this post I am using the pictures of various locations (including my local Sears in the Seattle area) just to show what they still have (this time all 5 stores that are still open), as well as screenshots of what the 140 year old retailer's e-commerce website looked like in the early 2000s and 2010 as well as what it looks like today.

When the internet first started in the 1990s Sears had and they still do have a website Sears.com and they have since been selling online and still are to this day. They had the best product selection, lots of web pages and all merchandise from Sears itself. Same goes for the service department, back in the day we would also consider Sears for appliance repair and even buy a part from them way before the merger... but / and even after Kmart bought Sears they were still good (and still looked good) at web design and the home repair business (Sears Home Services / SHS) and Sears Parts Direct were still reliable in the mid to late 2000s and even into the early 2010s...

As for the last Sears in Washington State, the anchor was originally built as a Frederick and Nelson department store in 1968. F&N closed up shop in 1992 and Sears relocated from the Renton Shopping Center to this spot, opening in 1994. This was during the Softer Side campaign from 1993 to 1999, which is why this place was a lot like JCP on the 1st floor. This location primarily had men's and women's clothing, jewelry and shoes, and by 2002, even a Lands' End section on the 1st floor, children's apparel, home goods (furniture, mattresses, housewares and small appliances) as well as store services (Sears Optical, Hearing Aids Center, Photo Studio, Watch and Jewelry Repair and likely even Tax Service) on the 2nd floor, and even electronics, vacuum cleaners, major appliances, tools, grills, exercise equipment and outdoor equipment on the 3rd floor. In 2006-2008 a couple more entrances were added here. The original Seattle store on Lander Street did have appliances, electronics, furniture, housewares and mattresses on the 2nd floor.
In all of our years of shopping here, back in 2016 when we went up to 3 in 2016 looking at vacuums, the electronics department was half of what it used to be but it was not to bad. But a year later, when we went inside the store and went up there twice in December of 2017 (one is with my mom when we were looking for a camera and the other is when all 3 of us, including my dad, went up there looking at vacuums), both times the electronics section was gone while [the Coral Gables one still did in 2017] (https://flickr.com/photos/25955895@N03/36494798354). By April 2021, so did the 3rd floor close down in the Southcenter location, and sometime a year or less than a year prior, the lawn and garden (L&G) department was gone as well. By August of that same year, they got rid of big name clothing brands. All of the fitting rooms here were blocked off and eventually boarded up.
By 2022 the restrooms on the 2nd floor were shut down permanently due to drug issues (confirmed by store staff), as some folks snuck into them secretly doing drugs. Despite all of these issues, the downfall and decline of this location and the product selection and quality decline, in December of that same year we bought a dress in the Toddler's clothing department for a daughter in our family. By 2024, the second floor had parts blocked off and eventually some dark corners. In May 2024 we went looking at mattresses, and in July 2024 after someone we knew recommended the brand Tempur Pedic, we went inside looking at wet/dry vacs aka (also known as) shop vacs looking for a replacement filter and later mattresses, we tried looking for a Tempur Pedic King Mattresses but they didn't have that anymore. This store was severely understocked and Whittier California was even more understocked.

We still supported this retailer and still do to this day.

2024 was the year that this location would be on the verge of calling it quits. It was a sad sight. If only such a great brand with a huge legacy didn't have such careless corporate leadership. This location shuts its doors for the last time on December 15th of 2024, 5 years after the Everett Mall location did.

I even shared my story about this location in the past: https://www.reddit.com/r/SEARS/comments/1jpypqx/if_sears_still_exists_and_hangs_on_as_an_8store/

That being said, despite Sears' troubles the retailer still had appliance and electronics dominance in the 2000s and early 2010s, we still bought from them and we have still been getting emails from them and visiting there website. In all of our years of shopping here, we went to Sears Optical, bought a JVC TV, treadmill, Sony digital cameras and system audio, a Canon point and shoot camera, a Kenmore Progressive upright vacuum, some rugs, a Whirlpool fridge from 2013 (Sears Outlet), and even clothing, as well as a Hamilton Beach toaster oven, a Kenmore coffee maker and Samsung stove from Sears.

When did you last buy from Sears site wide and/or even in store, what product and where, and when and where did you last work for Sears ?

Will / would you still shop at (also meaning buy from) Sears in 2025, even if / though the sales floors are limited on merchandise and the website Sears.com is also limited on merchandise sold by Sears ? Even if they do go the online route with the few remaining distribution centers ? If not why not ?

Please go and support them while you still can. Even site wide...

The Last Freestanding Sears Department Store in the United States at Coral Gables in Miami one of 2 left in Florida and 5 left in America (October 27 1954 - present)

Sears on Coral Way opened its doors on October 27th of 1954. The store was expanded and remodeled in 1997. Here are some pictures of some newspaper articles and the construction of the store, as well as the pictures from 2001, 2017, 2018, 2023, 2024 and even some pictures of hands on showroom Kenmore Studio last year. This is the oldest Sears that is still in operation and the last full sized store on the East Coast as well as one of the oldest and longest lasting that are still in operation today. Sears has maintained a brick and mortar presence for 101 years in the United States of America, 97-98 of which in Miami and all of the state of Florida, well over 71 of which with this store, and the online presence Sears.com for approximately well over 27-30 years, followed by the launch of the Sears Virtual Store in 2024 and [Kenmore Studio] (https://realestateindustrynewswire.com/press-release/kenmore-debuts-first-of-its-kind-studio-in-coral-gables-with-interactive-home-appliance-experience-302518073-184790/) last year.

Sears at 1601 North Harlem Avenue in Chicago Illinois 1952-2017

This Sears at 1601 North Harlem Avenue in Chicago Illinois that opened on March 5th of 1952 (10 years prior to K-Mart opening its first store in Garden City Michigan in 1962) closed down on September 17th of 2017 after 65 years of operation. Its lower level had a dental office right by the tool department, exercise equipment and game room, and a Sears Optical, Hearing Aids Center and Tax Service office, the 2nd floor had a portrait studio and the lower level had electronics on the striped (VCT tile) flooring and vacuum cleaners on tile. In fact the entire basement aka (also known as) lower level was tile. As of posting this, the last 1950s freestanding Sears is now at Coral Gables (3655 SW 22nd St, Miami, FL 33145) in Miami, one of 2 left in Florida and 5 left in the United States of America, that opened in 1954..... [where they launched a hands on showroom called Kenmore Studio last year] (https://searsvirtualstore.com/kenmore-studio/).

Sears 4000 North Shepherd Drive Houston Texas (August 10 1950 - August 30 2020)

Another representable Sears store in Houston and another representable non-mall location. This location had the coolest bus stop ! Store opened August 10 1950 and closed August 30 2020. The building itself was still standing for 75 years up until the recent demolition with the original Art Deco sign being preserved. This Sears was in operation for exactly 70 years ! As of the day of this post, the last freestanding Sears store is now at 3655 Southwest 22nd Street (Coral Gables) in Miami, one of 2 left in Florida and one of 5 left in the United States of America, that has been in operation since October 27 1954 (and they have since launched [hands-on showroom Kenmore Studio] (https://searsvirtualstore.com/kenmore-studio/) last year) and that store opened its doors well over 4 years after this one on August 10 1950. Sears is still also online as well

Sears at 4201 Main Street in Houston Texas (November 16 1939 - January 28 2018)

This was taken back in 2013! u/Professional-Hall702 took these pictures with an old Android phone that wasn't very good but did the job. The late 2000s and early 2010s was not to bad for Sears. They still maintained a robust inventory that time. This historic Sears location on 4201 Main Street in Houston Texas, was the only 3 level store in the Houston area and it opened on November 16th of 1939. It has been 8 years since this location closed on January 28th of 2018, 2 weeks after Sears Canada outright shut down entirely. And as of the day these old pictures are uploaded / posted on here, the other Sears that opened in 1950 and closed in 2020, the 2 level store, the other historic Sears in Houston, was being demolished.

First picture taken sometime in the 1960s the rest taken sometime in April 2013

As of right now, there is now only 5 Sears left, and the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, the last one in Texas, is one of them. They still also have the website Sears.com as well

Sears Department Store at Six Corners in Chicago Illinois (October 20 1938 - July 15 2018)

This location really did have 5 floors. Lower level was lawn and garden, tools, fitness, grills and patio furniture, the 1st floor was the women's, jewelry, shoe, appliance and electronics departments, as well as watch and jewelry repair, the 2nd floor was the entire men's department and even a dental office, the 3rd floor was the entire children's department and 4th floor was the entire home department, Sears Optical, Sears Portrait Studio, Hearing Aids Center, Tax Service and so forth. This Sears' appliance and electronics departments had the cylindrical shaped pillars. Next month will mark exactly 8 years since this store closed down on July 15th of 2018, just 3 months prior to the bankruptcy and back in 2018 just 5 days after Sears Holdings Corporation (SHC) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (Eddie Lampert happened) so did October 20th mark 80 years since this more than three level Sears store opened its doors

What is next for The Container Store now that they are undergoing a merger with Bed Bath and Beyond?

Located in the Southcenter Mall near Seattle Washington. This place was originally Borders Books. This merger is basically almost similar to Kmart acquiring Sears as orchestrated by Lampert. Still interesting to hear. How is this going to end ?

Sears Department Store at 76 South Lander Street in Seattle Washington (May 4 1925 - June 1 2014)

110 years after America was founded in 1776 on the 4th of July, Sears was started by Richard Sears in 1886. 39 years later, before the first Sears in California opened its doors in 1927 at Boyle Heights, before the first Sears in Florida opened in 1928/29, before the now last freestanding Sears in Miami opened in 1954 at Coral Gables, one of 2 left in Florida, before Sears went into shopping malls past 1957 or so, before the now last open Sears in California and on the West Coast at Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord opened in 1966, and before Sears.com was created in around the 1992-2000 period and forward... this first Sears location in my home state of Washington at 1st and Lander opened on May 4th of 1925, here in Seattle, 3 months after the 1st Sears in Illinois and the city of Chicago opened its doors at 900 South Homan Avenue on February 1st-2nd of 1925. That location in Chicago closed down on June 16th of 1984.

SODO Building
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starbucks_Center

This place is where we got our first digital video camera, a Sony Handycam tape based camcorder from December of 1999. In 2014, when this location was closing down, we bought some rugs (which were the best quality) from this Sears. They added powder to one of the rugs we bought to prevent damage.

The 1st floor was all apparel (Men's, Women's and Children's), jewelry and shoe departments, the 2nd floor had the appliance and electronics departments, furniture and mattresses and even a rug department, and on the 3rd floor was the tool department, outdoor equipment and exercise equipment, nearly the same layout as the Six Corners Sears' lower level. This location was THE PLACE we would get to with out having to go to the mall, as was the Aurora Square location.

This store closed on June 1st of 2014

The last Sears in Washington State, at the Southcenter Mall, has since shut down on December 15th of 2024 (the anchor was originally built in 1968 as a Frederick and Nelson department store) and as of August 31st 2025, the Sun Valley Mall location in Concord, the last in California, is now the last location on the West Coast, and in addition to that California is also the last state on the West Coast to have a Sears.

With that being said, this entire complex and the retail store itself (now abandoned) has a historic and unique interior and exterior design and it has been 101 years since this retail store opened its doors and 12 years since this store closed down on the first day of June 2014

All 1920s Opened Sears Locations in Chicago Illinois

Original Sears And Roebuck Department Store, Distribution Center And Corporate Headquarters At Homan Avenue And Arthington Street In Chicago Illinois February 1-2 1925 - June 16 1984

The first ever opened location in the city of Chicago that opened in early 1925 unfortunately closed down in 1984 before the company could even reach its centennial in 1986 while the others made it... the Sears department stores that opened in 1925, including at the now Starbucks Center on 76 South Lander Street in Seattle, where I live, made it to 1986 and 2000.

The last Sears in Illinois closed down on November 14th of 2021 and in my home state of Washington on December 15th of 2024. We are now down to 5 stores and [3-4 distribution centers] (https://transformwo.com/) and from what I heard, now even a warehouse in Manteno Illinois that was owned by Sears / TransformCo, and has since been sold off, shut down last December.

As for the others in Chicago that opened in 1925 and 1927, the longest lasting Sears store in the city of Chicago was the 90 year old location at 1900 West Lawrence Avenue that was in operation for nearly 91 years. Even before there was a Sears and Montgomery Ward, there was another iconic Chicago based department store, which was Marshall Field's, established in 1852, 20 years before Ward's / MW, 34 years before RW (Richard Warren) Sears Watch Company and 40 years before Sears Roebuck and Company. Even during Sears' dominance of American retail in most of the 20th Century, Field's was still in operation as were many other regional department store chains, such as John Wanamaker's, Jordan Marsh, Gimbels, Filene's, Hecht's, Abraham and Strauss (A&S), Seattle based Frederick and Nelson (F&N), Bamberger's, Emporium, The Broadway and so forth

Open Sears Department Stores

- Coral Gables in Miami Florida 1954 - present

- Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord California 1966 - present

- The Florida Mall in Orlando Florida 1986 - present

- South Shore Plaza in Braintree Massachusetts 1980 - present

- Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso Texas 1982 - present

They even have

- Sears website 1992/95/96/97/98/99 - present

- Kenmore 1913 - present

- Sears Home Services sometime in the 1950s or likely de facto 1992 - present

- Shop Your Way 2009 - present

- Sears Parts Direct 1995 - present

1886 - present

1892 - present

1925 - present

Warehouses / Distribution Centers

Transform Distribution Center in Arvin / Tejon Ranch California

Sears Distribution Center in Lawrence Kansas

Kmart Distribution Center in Fairless Hills Pennsylvania

Sold off but leased back Transform Distribution Center in Ocala Florida

All of this to say that it has been over 100 years since Sears opened this first location in Chicago Illinois and later the first Sears in Washington at 76 S Lander Street in Seattle and a few others in that year and this year is Sears' 140th Anniversary from 1886 to 2026 (1886 - present)
