Play dates and school friends in MAGA neighborhood.

My son just started school in a fairly rich and likely maga neigh hood. A lot of our state is, anyways. I’d love any tips on navigating friendships, play dates, etc. we’re never done playdates with parents we didn’t vibe with, but as he gets older it’s going to be a lot harder to gauge family politics, and in general, dropping my kid off at someone’s home feels super sketch. What age is this appropriate?

Lexapro?

Has anyone had increased loss on lexapro? I can’t tolerate spiro, so I’m stuck with just mino. My anxiety is really bad, but I’m so sad to risk further hair loss

Is mino helpful with AGA even with no dht blocker?

I’ve tried spiro twice and can’t make it past a few days even at 12.5mg. On mino 1.25mg but not stopping shedding at 2 years anymore. I’m too scared of fina and duta honestly. I’m under 40 and am worried about long term side effects. If I except my future- wigs or shaved head, does mino even help?

Unaware Lockdown drills

Sorry I didn’t know how to title this. My kids school did an unexpected lockdown drill in the first full week of kindergarten. No parents were made aware prior (I mean I know they would do them), but neither teachers nor students knew this was a drill, we were told they ‘experienced this as a real lockdown’.

Does anyone know if this is normal or have thoughts? My kid is too young to understand, but for older kids, this sounds terrifying and even traumatizing? I’d like to ask the school if it’s really necessary and ‘worth’ whatever benefit there is so not just announce ‘practice drill’- but am I out of line? Is there a benefit? How would I word or approach this? I’ve read about kids having anxiety from lock down drills and this ‘experience’ of not knowing it’s a drill sounds to make that worse.

Spiro and YI?

Ugh! I tried spiro again because mino is not working for me after 2 years. Fin and dut freak me out. I started with 12.5 for spiro and with 2 days I got a yeast infection. Seriously?! I haven’t had once since I was on birth control 8 years ago so I assume I get them when I have medications that mess with my hormones. Anyways, I quit last night because there’s no way I can last my whole life if this happens in 2 days. I’m so defeated. I guess wigs are my next step 🫩

How to pack a thermos?

Sorry for the dumb question. How do we pack a thermals for hot food? We like to pack raw veg and fruit alongside his lunch- is this possible?

Do the headaches go away? Can you skip?

I was prescribed spiro for hair loss. I tried it for about 4 days last year. The instant headaches were horrible. Despite gallons of water and electrolytes, i felt so dehydrated. Peeing non stop, light headed mess, couldn’t work out.

If you had these (especially the headaches), did they eventually go away? Can you share your dose?

Drinking was impossible. Just 1/2 beer and instant headaches again despite pre hydrating. I’m not a big drinker, but I do like 1-2 drinks on a hot summer afternoon occasionally. Can I skip spiro those days (1-2x a month)?

OAD parents with older kids, 18+, still happy with choice?

I would love a baby. Everyone around me is pregnant with baby girls (I have a boy). It’s not that I don’t want a baby. It’s not even about wanting one or not. It’s that I want the capacity, and I simply don’t have it. I fear for the person I would turn into if I had a second. But it feels like everyone around me has even harder careers (albeit worlds more support), and still has a second or third, or fourth. I know that long term I would want 2. But I don’t like who I know I’d become for the next 5 years. For those that have done this long term, any regrets?

Aftercare

I just need to be reminded that other parents send their kids to aftercare. When sharing my kid is starting K, everyone follows up with ‘is it all day?’ Yes…? And on top of all day. He goes to aftercare. These people know I work? I don’t get it.

On meet the teacher night we all had to fill out how the children would be picked up. There are only 2/25 kids doing aftercare, one being us. It makes me feel awful. I don’t get how 90% of parents can pull this off? They end at 12:30 every dang Wednesday. I grew up doing aftercare and loved it, but I still feel so guilty. I don’t even make that much money and I think that makes it feel worse. All the homes around the school are million dollar homes, how do they not require 2 working parents.

Fin Side Effects

I was considering going in fin. I stumbled about the fin sub and it’s horrible. the side effects seems scary and last even beyond stopping it for years. I want hair, but I also worry that I’m putting my health on the line if I take this med. Maybe I should just do wigs? I’d love my hair back. Cancer runs in my family and I’m worried to add something that’s harmed so many.

How did you decide?

Hair communities?

Is this the biggest hair loss community on the internet? Mino isn’t enough so I am looking at adding a dht blocker. I’m shocked by how little posts there are on them here and my Facebook group (even less). Are there any better subs or groups elsewhere to gather experience? Trying to decide between dua or fina.

Extracurriculars

How many is too many? We have our kid in swim (30 min on the weekend for safety), martial arts (twice a week, wish it was once but it’s just how the city has it set up), and we are also considering putting him in an art- piano or guitar. However, that would be 4 days of ‘activities’, if you count swim. Is that too much? Piano or guitar is something neither myself or his dad bring to the table, we aren’t big music people or really anything creative, so I’d love to give him this opportunity. How many is too much? I don’t want to overload him, but also give him experiences that we didn’t have.

Suggestions- decent reads I enjoyed: East of Eden, Invisible Monsters, Careles People, Eileen

I’m new to reading consistently. I have about 4 books in que at the library but there’s 40-50 people in front of me for each. Then half the time they don’t even have a lot of books! A lot of the other ones by Chuck who wrote Invisible monsters. I’m dying for a book but really need a page turner to keep my momentum and I’ve spent so much time trying to rent books that just aren’t available. I’m sure this is normal.

Printer- brother , printing only, wireless

I’m overwhelmed. Even with reading posts here then I look on the brother site and there are so, so many models and none seem to match up 😭

All I need is one that prints my kid school papers and labels. I’d prefer if I can print right from my phone. Small size. No scan or fax. No color. Double sided yes.

Thanks!!!

How to foster a love for learning

Neither my husband, nor I are really extremely driven people. Neither of us are the lifelong learner types, as in I hope to never have to do any schooling again. Don’t care to climb a corporate ladder and enjoy more of a low stress lifestyle. We are hard workers, but not in the rat race or perfectionist if that makes sense. My husband didn’t go to college while I’ve completed my degree in healthcare. Neither of us are big readers, although I’ve been getting into reading more much of it is while traveling or after my son goes to bed.

I’m hoping to raise my son to also be a hard worker that he can do hard things follow his dreams and enjoys learning. He does like to read at night, but I think that he mostly likes cuddling up with us. We read about 6-8 book a day split between morning and night, and it has been this way since he was born. Library weekly. He started saying things like this is boring lately. If you could all he would do is play play play all day. Rough House and imaginary player his favorite, he rarely sits still.

He isn’t too interested in learning to read. I know he’s only just entering K. What can I do do foster a love of learning, reading, and hard work, and help him to be better than us? We don’t do many screens, 2-4 hours on weekends of Disney movies or nature shows. We have lots of books on nature and the human body and he does enjoy those. But compared to some peers that seem to LOVE math, reading, etc, he just isn’t that interested in school. His dad disliked school and I’m hoping to avoid a similar path if we can.

Portland suburbs vs WA suburbs

Ideally we’d love to move to WA to be closer to family. But we probably max $650k so slim pickings. Looking at nicer areas of Tacoma. Other option is Beaverton near Portland. This is my favorite but farther from family. Coming from the desert so both options are exciting to feel trees and green surrounding us. Any cities in WA of a similar cost to Beaverton and around same amenities, or are we looking at middle of nowhere. Need to be within 1.25 hours of the airport ideally. Ideally 1 hour to downtown Seattle.

Refusing dinner nightly

😭 my kid has always been picky since even 6 months. It got better for a while but now he’s in a ‘you don’t control my body’ phase and eating 0 dinner. Maybe 1/4 cup fruit. He’s in camp and playing all day, so if anything he needs extra food and he’s working extra hard. At his 5 year apt his doctor was a little concerned he had only gained a few pounds in the last year. He’s always been 20%ile or below, often closer to 5%. I really don’t want to start offering seperate meals, but I’m also now concerned about his weight. Anyone else’s kid go through this?

Dietitian pay vs other careers

I’ve been struggling lately in so many forums where others around my age (40) are making so much more in their careers. I’m nearly $100k and thought I was doing pretty good for an RD (15 years), but I see so many (not RDs) making $120, $150, $170, $400k hhi. These are mostly in working mom and mom subreddits. It makes me feel inferior and like I should strive to leave the field and become an account manager or similar at a healthcare company. It’s much harder to ‘climb the corporate ladder’ as an RD. Not that I really want to, but I’m feeling left behind my peers. Just need a reality check or someone to tell me it’s okay we don’t make as much, or maybe a push to jump. I like my job, but I’m feeling inferior.

Finish the Montessori cycle and delay a year or move to K now?

Our plan is to move our son, born in July (school starts Aug 6), to public K this year. He comes from 3 years in a certified Montessori school. I’m getting cold feet, and wondering if we should keep him at Montessori to finish the 3-6 cycle- where he can become the leader. We would then start regular K public next year, so he would be the oldest in his class and held back. I really have no idea on readiness. He doesn’t love stuff like learning to read, sitting still, etc. he prefers to be silly and play when possible. I’m also worried about holding him back and him being bored if we delay a year. He knows most letters by their sound, can spell a few 3 letter words, very good at independent stuff like using the restroom, zippers, etc. he is a bit shy.
