8/3/2026: Puppy was being food aggressive, needs to be separated when feeding.

8/8/2026: Approaching kennel, Victor and his sibling retreated to the other side of the kennel, tail tucked, whale eyes, ears back, lip licked, timid and tense. During AM cleaning they vocalized at a few other dogs passing. Passing kennel, he was resting on his bed with his sibling.

8/9/2026: Quiet in kennel during AM cleaning. Lays with sibling and plays with enrichment throughout day.

8/12/2026: Mr Victor is the more timid of the two sibling that are house together, he will go to the other side to avoid interaction. I went to to pet his is band he started to shake and would move his head away so i would not touch him. I was went slow and used baby talk and treats to help him relax.

8/17/2026: Victor greeted me with a low posture and avoided me picking them up at first then stiffened when I did and curled up quietly in the temp kennel while their kennel was being cleaned. Passing kennel, he was resting on his bed.

7/26/2026: Weighed 14.4 lbs. Normal exam. Vaccinated with Rabies, DA2PP-V, and Bordetella, dewormed, and given flea prevention.

8/4/2026: Clear nasal discharge and sneezing. Assessed with CIRDC. Moved to treatment and prescribed Doxycycline 50 mg SID for 10 days.

8/5/2026: Monitor puppy for lethargy and not eating/drinking. Clear nasal discharge and sneezing. Assessed with CIRDC. Continue Doxycycline 50 mg SID for 10 days.

8/11/2026: On tech evaluation for loose stool. No loose stool observed this morning. Due for follow-up dewormer. Will dispense.

8/16/2026: Weighed 14.4 lbs. No URI signs seen today. DA2PP-V administered.

Jackie has been through so much. She is very thin and has contagious sarcoptic mange, with generalized hair loss, redness and scaling.

Even more concerning is her badly damaged right rear leg. X-rays show an old mid-shaft tibial fracture with reactive bone/callus and a distal femur fracture. BARC notes that the leg will need Amputation.

She received Advantage Multi for sarcops with repeat treatments recommended in 2 and 4 weeks, and carprofen/Rimadyl for pain. She is heartworm negative and has received vaccines and deworming.

🩺 Medical Notes - puppy Jenna

At only 4 weeks old and 3.5 lbs, tiny Jenna is also battling contagious sarcoptic mange. She has generalized hair loss, thinning, redness and scaling, and her skin scrape was positive for sarcops.

🩺 Medical Notes:
This sweet girl is heartworm positive, a treatable condition. She has a firm, mobile mammary mass (approximately 3 cm) on the left abdominal mammary gland, and BARC recommends surgical removal and biopsy by a private veterinarian. She also has an underbite with severely worn teeth, general hair thinning with fleas, and a small mammary mass was also noted during examination. She has been vaccinated, dewormed, and received parasite prevention.

🐾Behavior Notes:
No formal behavior evaluation has been completed yet, but her story speaks for itself. She was one of a group of dogs abandoned by their previous owner, left to roam after being deserted. Now, this frightened senior has landed in a noisy shelter where everything familiar has been taken away.

Medical Notes:

Duke arrived emaciated with a body condition score of 3.5/9 and weighing 59 lbs. He is heartworm positive and has severe generalized skin issues, including alopecia, hair thinning, crusting, and sores consistent with sarcoptic mange. He also has conjunctivitis, worn/fractured teeth requiring dental care, and long nails. Duke has started treatment including antibiotics, eye medication, parasite treatment, and preventative care. He will need an experienced foster or rescue who can carefully monitor his diet, medical recovery, and continued care.

Duke's Story:

Duke has a microchip and is neutered. Records indicate his previous owner received low-cost services for him many years ago. She stated she rehomed him about 3 years ago and now lives outside of Houston and was unable to take him back.

Despite everything he has endured, Duke has a gentle and sweet temperament. He walks well near other dogs and has shown no issues passing other kennel dogs. This senior gentleman deserves the chance to heal in a safe, loving environment.

7/6/26: Mikey growled and trembled when staff attempted to leash him. He refused treats and would not walk, requiring a muzzle for safe transport to another kennel.

7/9/26: Mikey was found lying quietly on his blanket with a tense body. He allowed staff to leash him but refused to walk, so he was gently carried to a clean kennel.

7/10/26: Mikey was moved to a new kennel. He walked with a tucked tail, semi-tense body, and ears back but willingly entered his new kennel. Once inside, he responded positively to treats and baby talk, wagging his tail.

💙 Mikey is a frightened young dog who is shutting down in the stressful shelter environment. While he is initially fearful and reluctant to walk, he begins to relax with gentle handling, kind words, and treats, even wagging his tail once he feels safe. He needs a patient foster or adopter who can help him regain his confidence outside the shelter.

This girl is such a sweetheart. She sat in her kennel when she wanted to come out and was so happy. Her tail continued wagging. She was a little nervous, but after a quick playtime with another female she gained confidence. She walked by kennels on the way back in and she whined wanting to play with another puppy like she wasn't done having fun yet. Her wink didn't slow her down one bit.

📝 Shelter Notes:

6/28/26: Initially a bit timid, but quickly warmed up with gentle talking. Easily leashed, explored the outside comfortably, kept returning for more affection, and happily accepted treats.

7/3/26: Greeted staff with a very wiggly body, fast wagging tail, loose tongue, and soft open mouth. Walked on a forward leash and could be redirected with treats.

7/5/26: Walked on a very tight leash due to forward pulling. Showed aroused behavior with dilated eyes and heavy panting but paid little attention to dogs she passed. Easily accepted treats and calmed briefly before resuming her excited behavior.

7/7/26: During morning walks, Sunny vocalized and lunged toward some dogs passing her kennel. Placed on an adoption evaluation.

7/8/26: Vocal during morning cleaning but showed no reaction to dogs passing her kennel. Greeted staff with a very wiggly body, fast wagging tail, and soft open mouth. Walked on a forward leash while ignoring the trail of treats.

💗 Sunny is a young, happy Labrador mix who loves people and quickly bonds with those who spend time with her. She greets everyone with an enthusiastic wagging tail, enjoys affection, and is eager to interact. Like many young Labs, she has lots of energy and can become excited on leash, but she redirects well with treats and continues to show a friendly, social personality. She deserves the opportunity to grow up in a loving home instead of losing her life in the shelter.

💜 Winnie is a gentle senior who is showing the normal effects of aging but still deserves comfort, love, and a soft place to rest. At 10 years old, Winnie should be spending her golden years in a peaceful home-not facing euthanasia in a shelter. 💔🆘 6/23 MEMPHIS A656919 NEEDS HELP TODAY . MEMPHIS lost his home through no fault of his own, he was picked up after his owner was incarcerated. You can see it in his eyes, he's worried. He knows bad things can happen here and he doesn't understand why he can't go home.

*we know she calls him June in the video, that was what the shelter had first named him but then changed it to MEMPHIS

Whatever happened in his person's life... MEMPHIS didn't do anything wrong. But somehow, he's serving a sentence too.⛓️

This beautiful Husky mix has been sitting in the shelter since 5/29, and unless someone steps up TODAY, he's at risk of disappearing on 6/24.

It's not fair. He didn't choose any of this. He didn't choose to lose his home. He didn't choose to end up in a crowded shelter where good dogs run out of time.

Moms and nursing puppies are especially at risk in the shelter environment due to immature immune systems and increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. Diva and Dani urgently need a foster, adopter, or rescue placement where they can safely remain together while Dani grows and Diva receives the care she needs.

📈 Medical Notes:
Diva is heartworm positive, a treatable condition, and has been vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for fleas. She also has small areas of patchy hair loss.

Little Dani weighs just 1.7 pounds and has patchy hair loss with scabbing consistent with suspected flea allergy dermatitis. She has been dewormed and received flea treatment appropriate for her age and size.

🐾 Behavior Notes:
Diva is an attentive and highly protective mother, which is understandable given her tiny puppy's age. Once separated from her maternal duties, Diva is friendly and social.

Dani is a vulnerable 3-week-old puppy who depends completely on her mother for care and comfort.

🙏 Diva has done everything she can to protect and care for her tiny baby. Now this devoted mom and her fragile puppy need someone to protect them. Please help Diva and Dani leave the shelter together and get the safe, loving place they desperately need.

Houston’s BARC Animal Shelter has been pushed beyond its limits after receiving 80 Chihuahua mixes from a single hoarding case.

The dogs reportedly lived outdoors in a yard filled with trash and debris, with little to no socialization or exposure to normal home life. Because of their background, many are terrified, shut down, and overwhelmed in the shelter environment. Most have been designated rescue-only and urgently need placement.

BARC was already operating at capacity before this intake. An additional 80 dogs arriving at once creates a crisis that affects not only these Chihuahuas, but every dog currently in the shelter. When kennels fill, space becomes even more limited for incoming strays and owner surrenders, putting more animals at risk.

💔 These dogs are not aggressive. They are scared and untrained.

Many have likely never:
• Lived inside a home
• Walked on a leash
• Experienced routine human interaction
• Known what safety and stability feel like

Experienced PATIENT fosters are being asked to step forward. Even taking one dog can make a difference.

This situation is also a reminder of why spaying and neutering matters. Animal hoarding and uncontrolled breeding continue to overwhelm shelters across the country, while thousands of healthy, adoptable pets wait for homes.

Behavior (growling at potential adopter, licking lips, whale eyes, stepping back when handler approaches kennel, tense body, flinch when handler leashes, became skittish when door closed behind him attempting to find a way out)

06/15/26 17:56 Moved to DD after cleaning by another staff member. I approached for PM walk and he stepped back, licking lip and whale eyes, flamingo paw and tail down in S-shape. I baby talked and he made no reaction, neither to treats. Lassoed leash on and he walked outside with tail down in S-shape, very tense and timid, flinchy but maintained loose leash next to me. Pottied on leash. walked back into kennel, panicked a bit once inside and door closed behind him, trying and find way back out, but then walked with tail tucked into kennel. flinchy and took a couple touches with the leash handle to desensitize him to touch enough to pull leash off

When approaching with a potential adopter he was loudly growing with a stiff body in the back left corner of his kennel. When I went to leash him he forward lunged while snapping at the leash. I tossed treats and gave him a chance to settle. After awhile I tried to leash again and he showed the same behavior. Caused the potential adopter to no longer be interested.
