Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm
“Slave to the Rhythm” came out in 1985.
and still sounds ahead of its time. Today is Grace’s 78th birthday.
Grace Jones was born on May 19, 1948, in Spanish Town, Jamaica. She moved to Syracuse, New York when she was still a child and attempted modeling. American agencies didn’t really know what to do with her look at the time. After that she moved to Paris, where her modeling career exploded and she became part of the fashion/art scene there in the early 70s.

Born before TV
108-year-old Susan Young Browne grew up on a 40-acre farm in Delaware without electricity or indoor plumbing, but never gave up on her dream of becoming a teacher. She earned a college degree and taught grades 1–8 in a one-room schoolhouse, becoming a living example of perseverance, education, and Black history spanning more than a century.

The Mardi Gras Indians are one of the reasons Louisiana feels different from every other state
One of the reasons I love visiting New Orleans is because of people like Big Chief Demond Melancon.
The man literally lost his home while spending years making his Mardi Gras Indian suits by hand bead by bead, and still kept going because preserving the culture meant that much to him. That’s the kind of dedication and pride behind Black New Orleans culture that you can actually feel when you’re there.

Black box - Everybody, Everybody (1990) Meanwhile this track has one of the wildest stories of the 90s
“Everybody Everybody” by Black Box is a classic, but a lot of people still don’t know the vocals were actually sung by Martha Wash.
She also sang “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now),” another massive 90s hit, and wasn’t properly credited there at first either.
After years of labels using her voice while putting other people in the videos, Martha Wash sued over it and ended up changing the industry. Her case pushed labels to start properly crediting singers in songs and music videos.
One of the greatest voices of that era and most people had no idea who she was.
