We are a volunteer network dedicated to helping at-risk dogs. We are not affiliated with BARC. We connect at-risk animals at the BARC shelter with the adopters, fosters, and rescue organizations needed to save their lives. 💙 Here is gorgeous Yogi (A599713) He is 4 years old and 54 lbs. Yogi came into the shelter on 07/03.  He is easily leashed, allows full handling and is very affectionate – he leans in for pets.  Yogi takes his treats gently and responds well to the “sit” command. Yogi shared his kennel with another dog on July and he may be able to live with canine siblings with separation and supervised, slow, patient and appropriate introductions.  Yogi has a slight limp in his back leg and should be seen by a full-service vet. Please consider opening your heart and home to precious Yogi. He is available for adoption directly from the shelter (but can also be fostered through a rescue if someone can foster him).

8/21/2026: 1 brown pitbull with collar roaming the area very aggressive chased caller is afraid and will be chasing children. Intake condition minor.

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

8/27/2026: Cherry shows a neutral body, with a worried face. She walked on a loose leash to the runs, but when I came back for her, she would run away from me, not letting me leash her, another ACT had to help me catch her, she seemed treat motivated as she was able to be leashed if you sneak the leash around her while she eats treats.

8/26/2026: Cherry presents a tense body, with a worried face, and a semi tucked tail. She has been painting her kennel, and as I clean her kennel, she will get near me, and smell me.

8/25/2026: Dog greeted at the back of the kennel with a worried face, tense body, and darting around to avoid the leash. After leashing dog walked with a loose leash outside to the runs. Dog avoided the leash. Had to have help from ACT SP to help me catch dog. Easily returned to kennel.

8/24/2026: Same behavior exhibited as described in behavior note from 08/23/26 - This dog greeted me at the kennel door with a low tail and avoiding eye contact. She dodged my leash a few times but then walked to and from the potty yard with the occasional freezing at sounds and doorways. Inside her kennel she can be seen sitting on her blanket. When I try to clean her kennel she will attempt to bolt out of the kennel door.

8/23/2026: This dog greeted me at the kennel door with a low tail and avoiding eye contact. She dodged my leash a few times but then walked to and from the potty yard with the occasional freezing at sounds and doorways. Inside her kennel she can be seen sitting on her blanket. When I try to clean her kennel she will attempt to bolt out of the kennel door.

8/28/2026: Dog was in the back of the kennel, neutral body, low tail and neutral face. Walked out to the runs holding a loose leash, neutral body and low/tucked tail.

8/27/2026: Dog is in the back of the kennel, whale eyes, tensed/trembling body and tucked tail. I was able to leash and baby talk him to come outside. He slowly got up and approached the front of the kennel. I tossed treats and he accepted them and followed me out to the runs. Held a tensed body, semi-army crawling and tucked tail.

Look I know you guys are tired of me saying “yoku this” or “yoku that” but the dude is on his 2nd extension at BARC and that HAS to mean something, right? I saw him for a THIRD time today to finally temp test him with another dog and this is the first time I saw a pep in his step. He got kisses from Judy through the fence and that was the first time I saw a real tail wag from him. Anyways this is just another post to bump him up because his people just havent seen him yet.

I saw Yoku in his kennel tucked into a blanky on Sunday and I didn’t want to disturb him, he looked like he hadn’t been that comfy for a long time. That video I took stuck with me, I thought about him every single day, I even asked (@woofgangv) to check on him to see if he was okay. Well today I went back and took him out, and quite frankly he would’ve rather I left him in the AC. You can tell Yoku has lived a hard life and he’s ready for the soft life. He gives big stray vibes, weary (but can be bribed), walks along the walls, ducks in the doorways, and is slightly head shy. I hope the shelter won’t be the last place he’s ever felt safe.

🐾 Behavior Notes:

Yoku is a gentle old soul. He is quiet, calm and relaxed. He spends much of his day cozied up on his bedding and blankets, but will slowly get up to greet staff with a wagging tail and soft face.

He is easy to leash and walks slowly on a loose leash, so staff simply follow his pace. Outside, he potties and then enjoys lounging around. He loves treats, sits patiently for them and takes them gently from your hand. Staff even noted that he keeps his kennel clean day and night and may already be potty trained.

One staff member has been giving Yoku an extra blanket to wrap up in, and he curls up and sleeps peacefully beneath it.

🙏 Yoku isn’t asking for much — a soft bed, warm blankets, treats and someone willing to walk at his pace.

Please foster, adopt, rescue or share him. Someone out there can change the rest of his life.

8/15/2026: Neutral and calm in kennel. Walks on a loose leash. Relaxed while in outside runs.

8/18/2026: Yoku is very quiet and relaxed in kennel. He is usually sleeping throughout the day. Cozied up on his blanket. When he gets up to greet me, he wags his tail as I offer him baby talk. Once leashed he walks out on a loose leash. He walks a bit slow so I follow at his pace. He may possibly be potty trained due to him keeping his kennel nice and clean throughout the day and overnight as well. Once he is back in his kennel he will go straight to his bedding and sit. I offer him treats on bedding and he eats them.

8/24/2026: Passing kennel, Yoku was quietly resting on his bed then got up to greet me with soft face and took a treat gently from my hand, staying neutral when pet. He was leashed easily and walked loosely and slowly.

8/25/2026: Yoku mostly sleeps on bedding throughout the day. He will slowly get up and walk to me as I leash, he walked out loosely to the runs. He does potty right away and then he is laying and lounging around outside. He loves treats, he will sit and wait for me to offer him some. Once he is back in kennel he is cuddled up on his bedding. I have been offering another blanket to wrap him with and he usually sleeps very well with it.

8/12/2026: Weighed 83.0 lbs. Diarrhea. Heartworm test: High Positive. Vaccinated with DA2PP-V, Bordetella and Rabies, dewormed, and given flea/heartworm prevention.
8/12/2026: Weighed 83.0 lbs. Normal. Shot back leg.
8/14/2026: Weighed 83.0 lbs. Diarrhea. Unable to obtain fecal due to behavior/sitting on stool sample. GI/stress related. Panacur and Metronidazole prescribed for 5 days.
8/25/2026: Weighed 83.0 lbs. Bilateral lower entropion of lateral aspect with mild mucoid discharge. Terramycin prescribed for both eyes for 10 days. Consider entropion repair with private vet.
8/25/2026: Mucoidal discharge from left eye along lower eyelid margin.

Summary:

Yoku also developed diarrhea and was treated with Panacurs diagnosed with bilateral lower entropion, meaning his lower eyelids roll inward. He has mild mucoid eye discharge and is being treated with Terramycin to both eyes twice daily for 10 days. Shelter medical staff recommend considering entropion repair with a private veterinarian.

Yoku also developed diarrhea and was treated with Panacur and Metronidazole for 5 days.

8/16/2026: Triton was a Move Adopt this morning and was walked on a semi-loose leash to his new kennel in South B. After walks, Triton was laying down on his cot sleeping and stood up to greet me when he noticed me with a neutral body and eyes, open mouth smile, and low hanging tail.

8/19/2026: Triton will greet at the front of the kennel as he presents loose body, swaying tail and soft close mouth. Gentle when walking him on leash. Calm and quiet in kennel.

8/22/2026: Approaching the kennel, Triton was standing in front of the kennel gate with a wiggling body, open mouth smile, soft eyes, and fast wagging tail. He did a good job of keeping his kennel clean overnight and was very friendly and welcoming towards me as I walked into his kennel to leash him. He allowed me to rub his face and give scratched behind the ears. Triton was walked on a loose leash to and from the outside runs and paid little attention to other dogs as he passed by their runs and kennels.

8/23/2026: While walking a dog down the aisle, the dog that I was walking started to vocalize and lunge towards Triton which made him return the same action back; lunging, vocalizing, and showing teeth. Made into Adopt Eval.

8/24/2026: Triton approached at the front of the kennel as he presented loose body, swaying tail and neutral ears. Gentle when walking him on leash. Remained calm and quiet in kennel throughout the morning.

8/24/2026: While assisting a Vet Tech with a heartworm test: he greeted me with wiggly body, wagging tail, ears back, squinty eyes, wagging tail, was easily leashed and remained calm as other dogs began vocalizing in the row, he maintained same behavior as I gave him pets and scratched his rump. Very sweet.

8/24/2026: When I approached his kennel, Triton was sleeping in his Kuranda bed. When he heard me and an ACT approach, he greeted us with a wagging tail and wiggly body. He did very well while drawing blood for a heartworm test even though many dogs were barking loudly in the room. He readily ate treats once back in his kennel.

8/25/2026: Triton will greet at the front of the kennel as he presented loose body, swaying tail and soft close mouth. When placed in the outside run noticed he started to low growl at the dog next to him but once I said "no" he stopped and greeted me. In the kennel he remains calm and quiet behind sheet.

8/13: John Wick was reportedly abandoned by a tenant who moved out.

8/16: John Wick was trying to jump the fence but was friendly otherwise.

8/22: John Wick appeared stressed in his kennel. He was crying throughout the day, heavily panting and pawing at the kennel door. His kennel was covered to help him settle.

8/24: John Wick's kennel was covered because he was standing at the front of the kennel panting and crying.

8/25: John Wick was in his kennel tapping his feet. When leashed, he walked on a loose leash to the run and back to his kennel. Once back, he laid down.

💖 John Wick is a 7-year-old boy who appears to be struggling with the stress of shelter life. He has been seen crying, panting and pawing at his kennel door, but outside of his kennel staff have seen a much calmer side of him. He walked on a loose leash to the run and back and was described as friendly. After reportedly being abandoned when his previous owner moved away, this boy deserves the chance to feel safe and secure again. A quiet foster or adoptive home could give John Wick the opportunity to decompress and show who he really is outside of the shelter environment.

It’s the LAST CALL for APPLE BLOOM, now at-risk of euthanasia!

Apple Bloom was found after two weeks alone in an abandoned apartment. Her previous “family” was evicted and she was brought to the shelter in late-July.

She arrived nervous with her tail tucked between her legs, but she has since been improving. She has shown a sweet and brave side, eagerly taking chicken jerky from volunteers and even jumping into a pool. She has recently made progress with her handlers, becoming easier to leash and taking treats.

She is super cute (as you can see), engaging, is neutral in playgroups, and is healthy.

Apple Bloom loves treats! 🍖

Shelter Notes:

Apple Bloom is listed on the at-risk euthanasia list primarily due to behavioral challenges caused by severe shelter stress.

Key Reasons for Her Listing:

Kennel Behavior: She is terrified of the kennel environment. When handlers approach her cage, she exhibits fearful defensive behavior, including growling and tense body.

Shelter Trauma: Her behavior is a direct result of trauma. She was abandoned alone in an apartment for two weeks after her owners were evicted, making her highly sensitive to confinement.

The Good News:

Outside of her kennel, volunteers report she is actually sweet, brave, and loves treats, but she desperately needs to leave the stressful shelter environment to decompress.

Snoopy was confiscated following a minor bite incident on 8/15. The bite was to the person’s chest, and the wounds were described as minor and treated by cleaning and mupirocin ointment.

🐾 Behavior Notes:

Snoopy is only 6 months old and reportedly spent the previous two months roaming freely after being given to the household. They reported that he did not like being leashed or picked up.

When animal control attempted to restrain him, Snoopy ran and could not safely be caught, so he was tranquilized for impoundment.

This is a very young puppy who appears to have had little experience with routine handling, restraint or leash skills. Because of his bite history and handling concerns, Snoopy needs an experienced rescue capable of safely evaluating him and helping him learn at his own pace.

🙏 Snoopy is just 6 months old. Please don’t let Snoopy’s life end before he’s had the opportunity to learn. He needs an experienced rescue willing to safely work with him and give this young puppy a chance at a different future. Please share and tag rescues who can help.

Apollo was given as a gift and surrendered in early-August because his previous owner is unwell and having financial issues.

He completely shut down after owner left him at the shelter. He is refusing to walk and is overwhelmed… 🥲

Apollo is crate-trained, a good leash-walker, loving, playful, young and healthy.

He earned the 2nd best behavior rating and is friendly with strangers, kids and familiar dogs.

Apollo loves hugs and treats!

Because the shelter system is facing a severe overcrowding crisis, Apollo was given an urgent euthanasia deadline.

Bambi arrived to the shelter as a stray.

He is listed for pulling hard on his leash and being too excited in interacting with staff (e.g. jumps on people)… 🤧

He is working hard on his manners and is hoping for the guidance he previously never received.

Bambi is energetic, bouncy, healthy, young and fun!

SHELTER NOTES:

Bambi is listed on the at-risk list due to behavioral concerns that stem from severe kennel stress. The loud, cramped shelter environment has caused him to deteriorate quickly.

The specific behavioral notes from the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) include:

Intense Kennel Deterioration: Shortly after arriving, Bambi became incredibly anxious inside his kennel. He frantically bites his crate bars and chews on the kennel walls.

Low Impulse Control: When he gets excited or over-aroused, he has trouble calming himself down. This causes him to jump up, mouth his handlers, and bite his leash during walks.

Leash Pulling: He is a very strong, high-energy dog who pulls while out on the street.

Gumball arrived as a stray at the beginning of August.

He is listed because he doesn't want to return to his kennel. He is terrified of his kennel. When handlers try to put him back inside, he freezes, "pancakes" to the floor, and refuses to move. Returning him often requires multiple staff members.

Gumball is sweet, social, and engaging with handlers. He is just very afraid of his kennel.

The Shelter Notes:

Gumball is listed due to severe shelter anxiety and behavioral concerns related to his kennel environment. While he is sweet and friendly outside, the stress of the facility made it difficult for handlers to manage him inside.

Gumball's Positive Traits:

After 15 YEARS, Scat was dumped at Animal Control. At his age, he should be sleeping comfortably in a home, not wondering what happened to the family and life he knew.
Please do not mistake this for a dog simply waiting at Animal Control. Scat needs a commitment before his deadline OR THEY WILL KILL HIM WITH A HORRIFICALLY PAINFUL HEARTSTICK
