Waylon Jennings is underrated
I know that this sounds crazy, but I really believe that Waylon Jennings is actually underrated in country music history. Everybody always talks about Johnny Cash, George Jones, Merle Haggard, when they’re talking about older country music. I love all of those artists, and they were fantastic. Waylon Jennings belongs in the same discussion.
I know it’s subjective, but I have Waylon as the second best country singer of all time after George Strait. The man could sing anything. He didn’t just do straight country music. He sang some songs bordering on pop country, but he added his flair to them. His rendition of “MacArthur Park” is the best vocal performance I’ve ever heard in the history of music. I’m talking about the revisited version. He performed the song the first time as a duet. The man could flat out sing, but doesn’t get the credit that he deserves I don’t think.
Edit: whenever there’s an article written or a documentary or something like that, they mainly just mention the outlaw music with Waylon. They don’t include him with George Jones, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr, or Merle. They usually include Waylon with Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Waylon is known by hard-core country fans, but he’s not known by casual country fans I don’t think.
