My wife gifted me a turntable for my 40th birthday (ten years ago this coming December 8th) and when I asked the guy at my local record shop how often I should change my stylus when I first got it, he told me unless I hear some issues, I won't need to change it for a long time. Well, I never thought anything of it until I read in this sub that needles should be replaces after 500 - 1000 hours of play.

Well. I replaced my stylus today with one I read a recommendation of in this sub. I got the the LP Gear Upgrade for Audio-Technica ATN91R stylus and you can really hear the difference. It's not B.S. The soundstage is much wider when I've got headphones on. I'm impressed.

To make sure I don't make the error again, I added a widget to my computer desktop that's right next to my turntable. Now I can count every time I play a side of an album. When I get over 1,364 I know if will be time to start thinking about replacing it before I hit 2,728.

Also, I already knew about replacing the belt every 3-5 years so I write the date I installed the belt install under the plater with a grease pencil. It saves the guess work.
