An entire brigade listening in silence before battle, 1918

An entire brigade listening in silence before battle, 1918

October 1918, France. Brigadier-General John Vaughan Campbell addresses the men of the 137th Brigade near the St. Quentin Canal during the final weeks of WW1. Thousands of soldiers packed into a single frame, many unaware of what awaited them ahead. A haunting reminder of the sheer human scale of the Great War.

Charger stopped mid session. App said it was working fine. Third time this month. Is any network actually reliable or are we all just pretending

Not even angry anymore. Just tired. Is there a network in the UK where the real time status actually reflects reality or is checking the app before you drive somewhere just wishful thinking at this point?

My friend dragged me to a show I knew nothing about and now I cannot stop thinking about it

Went in with zero expectations because I had no choice. Came out genuinely emotional in a way I was not prepared for in the slightest. What is the West End show that blindsided you completely and that you would send everyone you know to see?

Engineer fixed in 20 mins what three months of phone calls could not. How ?

ISP kept telling me everything looked fine remotely. Engineer arrived, opened the cabinet, did something I could not see, and my speeds doubled. What are they actually doing that no diagnostic tool apparently can?

Am I about to make a huge mistake or a genius move?

Amex Gold offer ends Monday. 40k points for £5k spend in six months. My brain is saying yes. My wife is saying we do not need another credit card. Who has actually done this and was it worth the domestic argument?

My car has 187,000 miles on it and three people this week have told me I should get rid of it. It has never once let me down. At what point does high mileage actually become a problem rather than just a number that makes people nervous?

Amy winehouse statue, Camden market ❤️❤️

Wow, the statue really does capture her spirit, doesn't it? I love how it's placed in Camden Market, such a fitting spot for a soulful icon like Amy Winehouse

What is the most satisfying engine rebuild or repair you have ever completed and what made it feel like more than just fixing a mechanical problem?

What is the due diligence step that most new property investors skip that experienced investors consider completely non negotiable?

The thing that only becomes obvious after you have either done it and been glad you did or skipped it and paid for it later. The step that separates people who treat property investment as a business from people who treat it as a property purchase.

What is the one thing about EV ownership that nobody told you before you made the switch that you wish you had known going in?

Not the range anxiety conversation which everyone has heard. The specific thing that surprised you. The behaviour change you did not anticipate. The thing that turned out to be much less of a problem than you expected or much more of one. What genuinely changed about how you think about driving after switching.

Which performance have you seen in the West End that you think about regularly and genuinely believe was one of the greatest things you have ever watched a human being do live?

Not the show necessarily. The specific performance. The night where someone on that stage was operating at a level that felt almost impossible to account for. The kind of thing that makes you sit very still at the end because you need a moment before you can applaud. What was it and what made it that.

Full fibre rollout coverage maps versus what is actually available when you check your specific postcode is a gap that should be talked about more isn't it?

The national coverage statistics sound impressive. Then you check your actual address and find that the cabinet three streets away is connected and yours is not and the estimated date keeps moving. The headline numbers are doing a lot of work that the ground level reality does not support. Has anyone here been waiting for full fibre availability for significantly longer than the original estimate suggested.

Can someone explain what the difference between being employed and being inside IR35 as a contractor actually means in practice for the money I take home because I cannot make sense of it?

I have read three articles and watched two YouTube videos and I understand the words individually but not what they mean for my actual bank account. Someone offered me a contract and said it is inside IR35 and I need to understand if that is just the same as being employed basically or if it is different and how. I am not trying to avoid anything I just want to understand what I am agreeing to before I sign something.

The number of empty shops on Mare Street right now is really bothering me and nobody seems to be talking about it?

Walked the full stretch last week for the first time in a while and counted more shuttered units than I expected. Some of them have clearly been empty for months going by the state of them. And this is supposed to be the main high street of one of the most talked about boroughs in London. I know business rates are a nightmare and the pandemic did lasting damage that never fully healed. But there is something quite deflating about it when you actually pay attention rather than just walking past. Does anyone know what is actually happening with some of these units or is it just the same story of landlords holding out for rents that nobody can actually pay.

Got the letter on Friday and it is all very friendly in tone. Words like supportive and checking in and just want to see how you are getting on. But I have never had one before and a few people I know have said these meetings can sometimes be the start of something more formal. I am genuinely unwell and have fit notes covering the whole period so I am not worried about that side of it. Just want to know what these meetings actually are in practice and whether I should be taking notes or asking for anything in writing afterwards 🤔

My neighbour just had his whole driveway redone and now mine looks embarrassing and I was perfectly happy with it last week

Did not have a single thought about my driveway before Tuesday. It was just a driveway. It existed. I parked on it. Now I cannot stop staring at his lovely block paving every time I leave the house and my crumbling tarmac is making me feel personally attacked. Has anyone gone down the block paving route and was it actually worth it or is this just one of those things that feels urgent and then you spend a fortune and stop noticing it after three weeks 😩
