Weird Al Yankovic "A Brief History of Time" (American Library Association, 2002) poster

"Your bookshelf is 'totally pimped out!" This American Library Association READ poster features the incomparable accordion-wielding comedian, musician, and wordsmith "Weird Al" Yankovic. Wearing one of his many colorful shirts, Weird Al is holding a copy of Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time, which he would later reference in "White & Nerdy" from his 2006 album Straight Outta Lynwood with the apropos lyric, "Stephen Hawking's in my library." At the time this poster was released, Yankovic was preparing his next album, Poodle Hat. Through his music, many listeners learned the difference between a parody and a pastiche, and if your teacher used Weird Al as an example, then you probably had a cool teacher and were "first in your class at M.I.T." Weird Al encouraged audiences to "Dare to Be Stupid," a philosophy that can apply to libraries as well: do not be afraid to pick up a book that challenges you, explore a new hobby, or even learn how to play the accordion and master his epic song "Albuquerque."
