AMA: I'm ABC News reporter Emily Stewart (AKA"Sensible Emily"), here to answer your questions about the cost of living and making your money go further

Hey everyone, I'm Emily Stewart — you might know me as "Sensible Emily" from ABC News.

I'm an award-winning business and finance journalist with almost two decades of experience across ABC national news and current affairs programs on television, radio and online. I also edit the ABC's personal finance newsletter, Your Money Explained with Sensible Emily, and I'm the author of the book Sensible Money (2025).

Alongside my reporting, I have a Master of Business Administration from Melbourne Business School and a Bachelor of Commerce and Arts from the University of Melbourne.

Most of my work focuses on helping people understand the cost of living, from groceries and rent to budgeting, saving, and what government policies (including the federal budget) actually mean for your day‑to‑day life.

Keen to have a chat with this community, especially since you're all very across the reality of stretching a dollar.

Ask me anything:

  • saving and budgeting
  • navigating rising costs
  • making smarter money decisions
  • or what recent policy changes might mean for you.

Drop your questions below and I’ll be online from 4–5pm (AEST) on Thursday, 21 May to answer as many as I can.

We're journalists from the ABC's Canberra Parliament House bureau. Ask us anything about Australia's latest federal budget

Hi folks,

Jane Norman (national affairs correspondent), Clare Armstrong (chief digital political correspondent) and Tom Crowley (ABC News reporter, economics) here. We've spent the last week picking through the details of the latest federal budget and are keen to answer your questions about what's in it, and what it means for you.

We'll be online at 11am (AEST) on Monday, May 18, and we'll answer as many as we can.
