Best games for a vampire/witch hunter?
Hi there! I'd love to play a vampire or witch hunter, in the mold of van Helsing (or Geralt of Rivia, so let's get that one out of the way, ha!)
Any platform is fine, and any genre. Thanks a lot for ideas!

Hi there! I'd like to be a Van Helsing-style gothic monster hunter. Ideally and specifically, I'd like to go for witch hunter.
Are there any CRPGs that would fit the bill? Thanks!
For me, it's a combination of 1) atmosphere; 2) a sense of the liminal; 3) eldritch creatures and infinite possibilities; 4) eldritch and anachronistic vocabulary describing the mundane.
Atmosphere in these stores is simply incredible. I've never been to many of the places that HPL described in these tales, but there is something about a fog-strewn New England village overlooking a colonial graveyard, or odd chantings from an ancient church, that I find absolutely irresistable.
This is coupled with a sense of the liminal - a space between worlds. Lovecraft described a very thin layer between a bus stop in Innsmouth and cosmic horror, making us realize how absurd and strange reality itself can be. Naturally, his monsters make the bizarre nature of the "true" nature of reality all the more palpable, and he couches everything wonderfully in strange, highfalutin language that is otherworldly.
I also like that you can visit a lot of the places he wrote about! I hope to, one day.
How about you? What do you like most about his fiction? Thanks for sharing.
Hi there! I'm enjoying Tolkien's work (The Hobbit, LOTR and The Silmarillion) and would appreciate some JRPG recommendations that would make excellent thematic pairings. I'd like to emphasize that any system is fine. Thanks!
I'm not inflexible at all; if something is unconventional and would fit the bill, then I'd love to hear it! In the past, I've enjoyed Chrono Trigger, Xenoblade Chronicles, Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default.
EDIT: I'm aware of The Third Age game from LOTR, and I'm looking for non-LOTR alternatives, thanks!
Hi there! I would truly appreciate your suggestions for PC games that:
- Are science fiction (space-centric preferred)
- Have excellent companions, choice and consequence
- Have some dramatic tension, perhaps a dash of cosmic horror, and some surprises
- Optional: Feature elite operatives
In short, I'd love to try some games that feature at least some of what made Mass Effect special. Thanks a lot!
Hi there! I was JUST about to install a modlist. Now I am concerned that the pending Skyrim update will break my mods.
Could someone please guide me on this? Are Wabbajack instances self-contained and immune from updates? If not, how can we circumvent the update? Thank you!
EDIT: The link in the thread below to a Reddit thread will help you prevent your Skyrim instance from updating. Hope that helps!
Hi there!
I just installed this acclaimed FM for the GOG version of Thief Gold.
I'm not using any other fan missions, and would like a direct desktop shortcut to The Black Parade.
Is there any simple way to do this? Thanks so much!
I'm struggling to remember, but another game I played recently definitely had the catchphrase: "Sit awhile and listen!"
It made me think of other places Diablo has cropped up in other media, as Easter Eggs and whatnot.
I'd appreciate it if you could share where you've seen a reference! Thanks so much!
Hi there! I am savoring the books right now and would love to play a complementary video game on the side.
My firm philosophy is that the games should not be Tolkien games in any way. Many games take liberties with the lore, to put it politely, and I would find it distracting.
Instead, I'd love games with some of the same "feel" in some regards, that stand completely on their own.
I'm on PC and Switch and would really appreciate your suggestions. Thank you!
Hi there! I'm a huge sci-fi fan and adore horror. Combining the two sounds fantastic!
I'm currently playing "Alien: Isolation" and I plan to play "Dead Space" and the "System Shock" remastered series.
I'd welcome your best recommendations beyond that. The sci-fi games can have horror elements (as in XCOM 2) or be really horror-based. Any genre is fine, including top-down point-and-clicks.
Thanks a lot! I appreciate it.
Hello there! I realize that my horror niche is Victorian/gothic/folk horror. Imagine a sunset over an abandoned house in Dorset in 1910, or rumors of odd happenings in the forest just beyond the village.
I adored "Excavation of Hob's Barrow," and I'm thoroughly enjoying "The Last Door" now. Additionally, I'm considering the Amnesia series and "The Dark Rites of Gotham."
I'd really welcome your best suggestions for other games in this general vein. Thanks so much for your suggestions in the vein of Lovecraft, Poe, M.R. James and "The Wicker Man."
I'm fascinated by Lovecraft because he lived relatively recently - in an age of electricity, cars, movie stars, photography - but his writing seems so otherworldly.
At the same time, he was enormously geographically grounded. He'd write, for example, about the donuts he'd buy at the Weybosset Pure Food Market (check out "My Breakfast with Howard," an episode of the 'Voluminous' podcast from the HPLHS).
You could trace his tracks! You could read about Copp's Hill Burying Ground in "Pickman's Model" and Providence's Industrial Trust Company Building (also known as 'the Superman Building') in "Haunter of the Dark."
I'd love to hear from anyone out there who had a memorable experience visiting Lovecraftian sites, based on either his stories or his correspondence. Maybe you went to the Danvers State Hospital for the Criminally Insane (likely inspiration for the Arkham Sanitarium in "The Thing on the Doorstep" and, later, Batman's Arkham Asylum) before it was converted in 1992.
Or maybe you visited Co. Meath, Ireland, featured in "The Moon-Bog" (even though the village of Kilderry doesn't really exist there).
Whether it's in Providence or beyond, I'd genuinely love to get your memorable "Lovecraftian site" experiences and recommendations. Few authors wed cosmic horror with the mundane as well as Lovecraft, and I'd love to hear about some great spots! (And any resources are always welcome!) Thank you kindly.
What are your favorite classes and which games, in your opinion, highlight them the best?
I'm asking this a bit selfishly because I'm eager to see what's out there! I'm a mage main (perfect in DAO, BG3 and DOS2) as well as an archer-related class (I've enjoyed being an archer-cipher in Pillars a lot).
So, to recap, I'd really appreciate it if you could share:
A. Your favorite classes
B. The games that have been most fun to play with those classes!
Hi there! I'd love to get some recommendations for any sci-fi media (books, movies, TV and video games) that feature incredible power armor. I want to stress that I'm using power armor in the broadest sense possible; even the Bat-Suit can, at times, be considered power armor in my book.
I was introduced to the concept via the Fallout universe. I think it's just incredible that sci-fi can adapt an ancient concept - a warrior's armor - and update it in science-fiction settings.
I'd welcome your suggestions! Thanks so much!
Hi there! I was hoping for some quick guidance on which modlist would best suit my needs. LoreRim and Gate are top, but I'm open to other suggestions (including the list that rhymes with Golvus):
- I'm very familiar with Skyrim and I'm looking for novelty.
- I'm most interested in new content: New characters, locations and quests
- I'd love a real challenge, but not a "Dark Souls" level challenge. I still want it to feel like high fantasy, not a masochistic challenge.
- I'd like outstanding graphics and can handle any of these lists
Thanks very much for your best suggestions! I appreciate it.

I’d love to play some video games to complement my reading of Tolkien. And, naturally, I’m turning to fantasy.
I’d really appreciate your suggestions. The games you propose do NOT have to be Tolkien video games! In fact, I’d almost prefer that they are not. But they do have to be fantasy and make for an excellent “wine pairing.”
Thanks a lot!
Hi there! I’m looking for outstanding PC games featuring elite teams in very tough space-centric situations. Any era, any genre.
Some examples that come to mind for me are XCOM (tangentially space-related); Aliens: Dark Descent; and the StarCraft series.
Think “Star Trek,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” or “Battlestar Galactica.” Teams that work out problem in space and on alien worlds, overcoming tough obstacles and enemies.
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.
EDIT: “Metroid” is another good example of a space pro of course!
I’m curious as to which other companies have shown mastery in the team-based, well-written ensembles we used to see in Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
Owlcat comes to mind! I’d welcome other suggestions. Thank you!
Hi there! I’ve never played these well-regarded games. They definitely have a place in survival horror history, and I love diving into the subgenre’s DNA.
At first glance, they seem (politely) a little clunky to control. Are they? And are there mods that will upgrade the experience?
(No need to mention the remake, I’m well aware! Thanks!)
