White settlers arrived after Columbus's 1492 voyage, but the real Texans were the Indigenous peoples who lived on this land for generations, tribes like the Tonkawa. European contact brought disease, violence, and displacement that devastated Native communities; even when some Indigenous groups allied with settlers or served as scouts, it didn’t spare them from dispossession and forced removal. The Tonkawa endured mission life, wartime alliances, massacres, and relocation to Oklahoma, where their descendants keep traditions alive today. Honoring Texas history means centering these original peoples and supporting their living communities, not just repeating settler myths.
