SpaceX parks Starlink in low Earth orbit so latency stays low; drag then forces a roughly five-year demise. Ferreira, Huang, Nomura and Wang at the University of Southern California simulated aluminum ablation at mesospheric temperatures and reported that a typical 250-kilogram satellite yields about 30 kilograms of aluminum oxide nanoparticles. Dual-use is global broadband versus a planned burn-up stream that injects Al2O3 where it can later meet stratospheric chlorine.

The 2024 Geophysical Research Letters paper estimated 17 metric tons of those nanoparticles from all satellite reentries in 2022, an eightfold rise from 2016, and about 360 metric tons per year if planned megaconstellations are fully fielded. Aluminum oxide is not consumed when it helps convert reservoir chlorine into ozone-destroying forms. Ferreira did not calculate a Dobson-unit loss. Murphy and colleagues in 2023 already measured spacecraft metals, including aluminum, in stratospheric aerosol from NASA aircraft.

KeepTrack listed 11,093 Starlink satellites in orbit as of 1 September 2026, with daily deorbits. A 2025 NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory run in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres used a 10-gigagram-per-year alumina case and found 1.5 kelvin mesospheric heating and a weaker Southern Hemisphere polar vortex, with mixed effects on the spring ozone hole.

Net risk is accumulation, not a proven new ozone hole today. Oversight gap: FCC and FAA license launches and debris risk; neither requires a measured alumina or ozone budget before another thousand satellites fly. Watch independent in-situ sampling and any material-change or on-orbit servicing rule.
