Losing Ground was written and directed by Kathleen Collins and completed in 1982, making her one of the first Black women to direct a feature film in the United States. Though it received little attention at the time, the film has since been restored and celebrated as a groundbreaking work of Black independent cinema for its thoughtful exploration of identity, marriage, art, and intellectual life.
